Poland Selects Sweden’s A26 Blekinge Submarines in $2.7B ORKA Program Deal

Poland has officially selected Sweden as its partner in the ORKA submarine program, confirming plans to acquire three A26 Blekinge Class submarines from Saab. The contract, valued at more than 10 billion zloty or $2.7 billion, is expected to be finalized before the end of 2025, marking one of the most significant defense procurements in Poland’s recent history.

The A26 Blekinge Class is widely regarded as a next-generation submarine, equipped with advanced stealth technology and optimized for operations in shallow waters such as the Baltic Sea. Its design emphasizes survivability, reduced acoustic signature, and the ability to conduct both conventional and special operations missions. For Poland, these capabilities are seen as critical in strengthening deterrence and ensuring maritime security in a region marked by growing geopolitical tensions.

Sweden’s offer was considered superior to competing bids from South Korea and France, with Warsaw highlighting delivery schedules, cost efficiency, and operational suitability as decisive factors. The Baltic Sea’s unique environment, characterized by shallow depths and complex acoustic conditions, requires submarines with specialized designs, and the A26 was judged to be the most effective solution.

Beyond the technical specifications, Sweden has pledged extensive industrial cooperation and technology transfer as part of the deal. This element is viewed as vital for Poland’s long-term defense industry development, enabling domestic companies to gain expertise and contribute to future maintenance and modernization efforts. The partnership is also expected to deepen strategic ties between Warsaw and Stockholm, reinforcing regional defense cooperation within the broader European security framework.

The program’s timeline has already been outlined, with Polish crews scheduled to begin training in Sweden in 2026. This training will utilize Swedish facilities and provide hands-on experience with the systems and operational doctrines of the A26 class. By 2027, a transitional submarine will be delivered to Poland to bridge capability gaps and prepare crews for the arrival of the new fleet.

The first A26 Blekinge Class submarine is expected to be delivered to Poland in 2030, marking a milestone in the modernization of the Polish Navy. Subsequent units will follow, ensuring that Poland achieves a robust undersea capability by the early 2030s. This acquisition is anticipated to significantly enhance Poland’s ability to monitor and secure its maritime approaches, while also contributing to NATO’s collective defense posture in the Baltic region.
