On September 1st, 2025, Denmark marked a significant milestone in its defense modernization efforts by receiving the first two units of the Patria 6x6 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) at the Almegårds Barracks on Bornholm Island. This delivery is part of a broader procurement of 129 vehicles under the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program. The initiative reflects Denmark’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities while aligning with regional defense cooperation.

The CAVS program, which includes Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Germany, and now Denmark, represents a strategic collaboration aimed at standardizing armored vehicle platforms across participating nations. By joining this initiative, Denmark not only gains access to proven military technology but also reinforces its role in collective European security. The shared platform ensures interoperability during joint operations and simplifies logistics and maintenance across borders.

Denmark’s decision to participate in CAVS also signals its intention to revitalize its domestic defense industry. The Patria 6x6 APC is a versatile and robust vehicle designed to meet the demands of modern warfare and peacekeeping missions. The vehicle’s adaptability ensures that it can evolve with changing operational requirements over time.

Weighing 15.5 tons when empty, the Patria 6x6 can reach up to 24 tons with hydropneumatic suspension, depending on mission needs and equipment load. This weight flexibility enables the vehicle to operate effectively in both land and amphibious environments. Its amphibious capability, with a maximum operational weight of 21.5 tons, allows it to traverse water obstacles at speeds of up to 8 km/h.

Measuring 7.5 meters in length, 2.9 meters in width, and 2.5 meters in height, the Patria 6x6 offers a compact yet spacious platform for personnel and equipment. It accommodates a crew of two to three, including a commander, driver, and optional gunner, along with eight to ten passengers. This capacity makes it ideal for rapid deployment and tactical mobility in diverse terrains.

The vehicle’s armor meets STANAG 4569 protection standards at level K2 and M2a/b, with optional upgrades to level K4 and M4a/b for enhanced survivability. This ensures protection against ballistic threats, mines, and improvised explosive devices, safeguarding troops during high-risk operations. The modular armor system also allows for future enhancements as threat environments evolve.

Powered by a DC 09 Scania AB inline five-cylinder diesel engine, the Patria 6x6 delivers 294 kW (394 hp) and 1,870 Nm (1,380 lbf⋅ft) of torque. This powertrain provides a power-to-weight ratio ranging from 18.3 to 12.25 kW/t, depending on the vehicle’s load configuration. The engine’s performance ensures reliable mobility across rugged terrain and under demanding conditions.

The drivetrain features a 6×6 wheel configuration, offering superior traction and stability on uneven surfaces. Coupled with a ZF Friedrichshafen transmission system with seven forward gears and two reverse gears, the vehicle achieves smooth and responsive handling. This combination enhances maneuverability in both urban and off-road environments.

Suspension options include independent coil springs and an optional hydropneumatic system, allowing operators to tailor the ride quality to mission requirements. The hydropneumatic suspension provides improved comfort and control, especially during high-speed travel or when navigating rough terrain. This flexibility contributes to crew endurance and operational effectiveness.

With a payload capacity of 8.5 tons, the Patria 6x6 can carry essential equipment, supplies, and personnel without compromising mobility. Its operational range of 700 kilometers enables extended missions without frequent refueling, a critical advantage in remote or contested areas. The vehicle’s endurance supports sustained operations and rapid redeployment.

On land, the Patria 6x6 reaches speeds exceeding 100 km/h, allowing for swift tactical movement and rapid response. Its amphibious capability further enhances its versatility, enabling it to cross rivers, lakes, and coastal waters without external support. This dual-mode mobility expands the range of operational scenarios in which the vehicle can be deployed.

Denmark’s acquisition of the Patria 6x6 also reflects a broader trend in European defense toward modular, interoperable platforms. As threats become more complex and multinational cooperation more essential, standardized systems like the CAVS offer strategic advantages.
