Denmark Confirms Permanent Acquisition of NASAMS, IRIS-T, MICA and SAMP/T Air Defence Systems

The Danish Ministry of Defence has confirmed that its interim solution for short and medium-range air defence will now be converted into a permanent capability, marking a significant step in strengthening the nation’s integrated air defence architecture. The acquisition includes two NASAMS batteries from Kongsberg, two IRIS-T SLM systems from Diehl, and two VL MICA systems from MBDA, ensuring a layered and versatile shield against aerial threats. In addition, Denmark will procure two long-range SAMP/T systems from MBDA, further enhancing its ability to counter high-end threats and contribute to NATO’s collective defence posture.

The decision to move from leased or temporary arrangements to permanent acquisitions underscores Copenhagen’s commitment to building a robust and sovereign air defence capability. NASAMS, already widely deployed among NATO allies, will provide Denmark with a proven and flexible system capable of engaging a wide range of targets. The IRIS-T SLM, a newer system that has demonstrated effectiveness in recent operational contexts, will add modern precision and mobility to the Danish arsenal. Meanwhile, the VL MICA offers a compact yet highly capable solution, complementing the other systems by covering different engagement envelopes.

The long-range component, represented by the SAMP/T, is particularly notable as it places Denmark among the few European nations fielding this advanced system. Designed to counter ballistic missiles and high-performance aircraft, the SAMP/T will significantly expand Denmark’s strategic reach and deterrence capability. Together, these acquisitions form a multi-layered defence network that integrates short, medium, and long-range systems, ensuring resilience against diverse aerial threats.

Operational timelines have also been outlined, with NASAMS expected to be ready by late 2025 or early 2026, VL MICA by the end of 2026, and IRIS-T SLM by spring 2027. The SAMP/T systems are scheduled to follow, aligning with Denmark’s broader modernization efforts. This phased deployment reflects both the complexity of integrating advanced systems and the urgency of enhancing national defence in a rapidly evolving security environment.

By investing in these capabilities, Denmark is not only securing its own airspace but also reinforcing NATO’s collective defence posture in Northern Europe. The combination of NASAMS, IRIS-T, MICA, and SAMP/T provides a comprehensive shield that will allow Denmark to respond effectively to modern threats, from drones and cruise missiles to advanced aircraft and ballistic missiles. This acquisition marks one of the most significant upgrades to Danish air defence in decades, positioning the country as a key contributor to regional security and allied deterrence.
