Switchblade 600 Block 2: Next-Generation Multi-Domain Loitering Munition
The Switchblade 600 Block 2 is the latest evolution of AV’s long-range loitering munition, specifically engineered for multi-domain operations. This system integrates advanced avionics and introduces a secondary payload bay, allowing operators to adapt the munition for a wide range of mission profiles.
One of the most notable upgrades is the inclusion of onboard processing powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. Combined with Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), this capability enables the system to autonomously detect, classify, and track targets with greater accuracy. The integration of encrypted GPS M-Code and Silvus Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) radios ensures secure and resilient communications, even in contested environments.
The Switchblade 600 Block 2 also boasts a 20% increase in endurance, extending its operational range and effectiveness. With a relay range of over 100 kilometers, it provides commanders with unprecedented reach. Its IP67 rating makes it suitable for maritime applications, further broadening its versatility. This system is a clear demonstration of AV’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions for modern warfare.
Switchblade 400: A New Category of Portable Anti-Tank Capability
The Switchblade 400 is a completely new addition to the Switchblade family, filling the gap between the lightweight 300 series and the heavy-hitting 600 series. Designed as a portable, medium-range anti-tank loitering munition, it weighs less than 40 pounds in its All-Up-Round (AUR) configuration, making it highly deployable by small units in the field.
Equipped with Rocket Assisted Take-Off (RATO), the Switchblade 400 can be launched rapidly, enabling operators to engage armored threats in under five minutes. Its warhead is capable of neutralizing tanks and heavily armored vehicles, providing a powerful yet mobile anti-armor solution.
The system is compatible with the Common Launch Tube (CLT), which simplifies training and integration across platforms. Like its counterparts, it incorporates ATR and edge computing, ensuring effective detection, classification, and engagement of threats both day and night. The Switchblade 400 represents a significant advancement in giving small units the ability to counter armored threats without relying on heavier, less mobile systems.
Switchblade 300 Block 20: A Proven System with Enhanced Capabilities
The Switchblade 300 has long been a battlefield-proven system, widely used by U.S. and allied forces. The new Block 20 variant builds on this legacy with several key enhancements.
The most important upgrade is the introduction of a modular payload bay, which supports the integration of an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) warhead. This allows the system to engage a wider variety of targets, including lightly armored vehicles. Despite these upgrades, the Switchblade 300 Block 20 remains highly portable, weighing only 7.2 pounds and easily carried in a backpack.
The system can be deployed in under two minutes, making it ideal for fast-paced operations. Improvements in endurance, upgraded sensors, and enhanced panning cameras provide operators with better situational awareness. The addition of a touchscreen interface, continuous Positive Identification (PID), and an extended range of up to 30 kilometers with an optional antenna further increase its effectiveness. The Switchblade 300 Block 20 continues to be a reliable, flexible, and cost-effective solution for modern combat scenarios.
Integration and Supporting Systems
All three new Switchblade systems have been developed in line with the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA), ensuring interoperability and ease of integration with existing platforms. They are fully compatible with widely used battlefield management systems such as ATAK, Nett Warrior, and AV_Halo Command Tactical.
A key enabler of these systems is AV_Halo Vision, formerly known as SPOTR-Edge. This advanced computer vision technology allows for object detection and tracking of personnel, vehicles, and maritime assets, even in environments where GPS or communications are denied.
Each system shares a common tablet-based Fire Control interface, which simplifies training and reduces the cognitive load on operators. Features such as wave-off and recommit options, combined with encrypted data links, ensure that operators maintain control and flexibility throughout the mission.
Production and Capacity Expansion
AeroVironment has a strong track record of delivering Switchblade systems, with thousands already fielded over the past 13 years. In response to growing demand, the company has significantly expanded its production capacity.
Production of the Switchblade 600 has increased sixfold in the past year, from 40 units per month to 240 units per month. Looking ahead, AV aims to achieve a production rate of over 1,200 units per month, a target supported by major investments in its facilities. The company has expanded its operations in Simi Valley, California, and established a new manufacturing plant in Salt Lake City, Utah. These investments underscore AV’s commitment to meeting the needs of U.S. and allied forces worldwide.
The introduction of the Switchblade 600 Block 2, Switchblade 400, and Switchblade 300 Block 20 solidifies AeroVironment’s position as a global leader in loitering munitions. These systems deliver a unique combination of flexibility, lethality, and interoperability, making them indispensable tools for multi-domain operations.
Already widely used by the U.S. military and allied forces, including Ukraine, the Switchblade family has proven itself as an effective, cost-efficient, and combat-tested solution. With these latest advancements, AeroVironment continues to shape the future of precision loitering munitions, ensuring that modern militaries are equipped to face the evolving challenges of the battlefield.
