Leonardo Signs Contract with TELEDIFE to Develop Long-Range Radars for Michelangelo Dome Defense System

Leonardo has signed a contract with TELEDIFE, the Directorate for Telematics, Informatics, and Advanced Technologies, for the development and delivery of four next-generation radar systems designed to counter long-range ballistic threats up to 3,000 kilometers. This agreement marks the second milestone for the integrated defense system known as Michelangelo Dome, following its official launch in November. In December, Italy successfully carried out the first qualification test of the SAMP/T NG Surface-to-Air Missile system, which operates with the advanced KRONOS Grand Mobile High Power radar developed by Leonardo.

The contract includes two types of radar systems: the Ground Based Radar (GBR) and the Mobile Long Range Radar (MLRR). Both systems are built on fully digital AESA GaN technology, which stands for Active Electronically Scanned Array using Gallium Nitride. This technology ensures high efficiency, wide detection coverage, and superior performance in complex operational environments.

The radars provide several key capabilities. They deliver high efficiency and extended detection range, enabling effective surveillance and early warning against potential threats. They offer precise identification and timely tracking of targets, ensuring that tactical awareness is continuously updated in real time. They also provide effective cueing to Fire Control Radars and associated effectors, enhancing the responsiveness and accuracy of the defense system. Furthermore, the radars are designed with open architecture principles, allowing seamless integration with cross-domain assets in line with the operational philosophy of Michelangelo Dome.
